Frequently Asked Questions:

How often does my child have Science Lab?

All students in Grades 1-5 meet for Science Lab with Mrs. Vogt every other week throughout the school year. The students will go to the Science Lab, which is located in Building C (Middle School Building ~ Willow Oaks Campus).

What will my child do in Science Lab?

Your child will have Science in their classroom as well as Science Lab as a resource. Quite often, Science Lab will be a "hands on" experience, with various themes being explored throughout the school year.  The program is STEM focused.  That is, there will be a focus throughout the year on the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.  The goal of our program is to instill and build upon a love for science, while strengthening each student's skills in these four critical areas.

What is Shoe Box Science?

During the first few minutes of each lab, we have "Shoe Box Science." This gives the children opportunity to share with the class any special item of scientific interest that they may wish to bring in from home. It would be appropriate to bring in something found on a nature walk, for example. It would not be appropriate to bring in a rock off of the playground or a seed from an apple eaten at lunch, however. We have had so many fascinating things brought in over the past few years - from a cow tooth to bird's nests to fossilized dinosaur dung! Please do not feel that your child much have something to bring in each time. If possible, we would like to have a bit of information about the item - what it is, where it was found, etc. Shoe Box Science is NOT a requirement, and WILL NOT affect your child's grade in lab. All items will go home with your child the same day. Please be aware that anything sent in will likely be handled by the other children, we ask that you do not send in anything of great value - either monetary or sentimental. This has been a wonderful way to share some of the children's discoveries and special interests with the class!
